EXPANDED FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM (EFNEP)
Since 1969, EFNEP has reached more than 34 million low-
income families and youth. This free program is offered as a
series of nine lessons in a curriculum designed to teach families
with children about USDA recommendations using an
interactive approach. Each lesson contains research-based
nutrition information, tips for stretching food dollars, physical
activity, and preparation of a healthy recipe. Participants also
receive educational enhancements that relate to the lesson of
the day.
Ohio EFNEP Program
What are the benefits?
Approximately 90% of all EFNEP participants
nationwide report improvement in the core program
areas of diet quality, food resource management,
food safety and physical activity practices due to
their involvement in programming. These
improvements help improve family wellbeing,
including reduction of future healthcare costs.
Who qualifies to be a participant?
Income eligible adults who are responsible for the
care of children qualify for EFNEP, such as parents,
grandparents, other extended family members, or
day care providers. Income eligible young adults
aged 18-26 without children also qualify for EFNEP.
What are the income requirements for
participants?
Any family with an income of 185% of the 2024
annual poverty guidelines as shown in the table
below is eligible for EFNEP’s free education
program.
How do participants graduate from the
program?
Participants who attend at least six of nine classes,
and complete entry and exit paperwork, are
considered program graduates. They receive official
certificates of completion from The Ohio State
University.
When are classes offered?
Agencies and groups can work with an OSU
Program Assistant to organize a program series that
meets their scheduling needs. If a participant misses
a class, make-up lessons via Zoom or self-guided
online modules are available.

SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM- EDUCATION (SNAP-ED)
What is SNAP-ED?
SNAP-ED is a free nutrition education program serving
low-income individuals eligible to receive SNAP benefits
or other means-tested federal assistance programs
throughout Ohio. The goal is to improve the likelihood
that families and individuals who receive SNAP benefits
will make healthy food choices and choose active
lifestyles.
Ohio SNAP-ED Program
What do participants learn?
Participants learn to make food choices for a healthy diet; to use limited resources to plan, purchase, and
prepare food; to be physically active every day; and to store and handle food safely.
A SNAP-ED Program Assistant will work with program partners to choose specific lesson topics for each
series to cater to the needs of the participants. A series generally consists of 3-6 lessons at 60 minutes each.
Lessons are interactive and utilize MyPlate and USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

each month depends on your income and family size.
